Ashen Hex examines how patriarchal societies constructed the witch to regulate female autonomy and how these violences were obscured in public memory. It studies the conditions that made women “accusable”: the witch emerged not from superstition but from moments when power needed a body to absorb fear and disorder. Women with knowledge, land or agency became threats not because they changed, but because authority required them to appear so.
The research traces this shift across history and space, from genealogies of stigma to civic and architectural mechanisms of erasure. Disappearance is treated not as silence but as evidence—showing how female presence was stabilised through invisibility.
The installation does not illustrate history but re-materialises what was removed. Through dissolution, temporality and sonic residue, it restores presence without fixing identity. Rather than commemoration, it proposes a counter-monumental logic where instability, melt, echo and trace hold memory. What remains is not a stable object but a persistence that survives attempts to contain it.
